Join the Activaters reflects commonly accepted general rules of healthy eating:
Variety
Children should adopt healthy eating habits by enjoying a wide variety of foods. This will help them obtain all the nutrients they require (protein, fat and carbohydrates plus vitamins and minerals) and enough energy to keep them going.
Fat Intake
Restricting fat intake is not appropriate for young children since they need the energy it provides for growth. A moderate fat intake should be encouraged as part of a healthy diet. Fat is an important nutrient and rather than over-restrict certain foods or nutrients it is best to balance children's intake with a wide variety of foods in healthy proportions.
Good and Bad Diets
There is no such thing as a 'good' or 'bad' food, only good or bad diets. Where children tend to eat the same foods every day and may limit the variety of key nutrients, they should be encouraged to explore and enjoy different foods, rather than simply told to stop eating certain foods.
Equally, children should not reduce food intake to lose weight. The concept of a healthy diet should be positioned in positive terms and in combination with active living - as a means to all round good health and vitality rather than weight control.
Regular Food Intake
Children require regular intakes of food as meals and snacks for their growth and development.
